GULAB JAMUN IN CHITTOOR: THE STORY BEHIND INDIA’S FAVOURITE SWEET

July 13, 2026
How many of us know that Gulab Jamun, an important sweet enjoyed during Diwali, is widely believed to have Persian origins?

Yes, the Gulab Jamun is likely to have emerged from the Persian dessert Luqmat-al-Quadi which had the same style of frying the dough balls and soaking them in sweet syrup.

Though gulab jamun has Persian influence, it is completely unique in its own way. The dough traditionally used to prepare Luqmat-al-Quadi was yeast while the dough used to make gulab jamun was Khowa (also spelled as Khowa or Khoya), a milk solid widely used in Indian sweets.

So, the next time when you enjoy Gulab Jamun, just think about how the blend of two rich traditions has turned into a plate of goodness.

And if you are one craving one now, visit our Honey Bee House to have a plate of soft Gulab Jamuns.
