SANDWICHES IN CHITTOOR: WHY IS IT CALLED A SANDWICH?

July 3, 2026
Sandwich is one of the most loved foods among the younger generation in India. What started as two pieces of bread with a veg or non-veg filling has now been given an Indian touch. Ice cream sandwiches, shawarma sandwiches, maggi sandwiches, all these varieties show how India has blended different foreign cuisines to create its own unique variation. The taste of a sandwich is based on various factors, and one such is the preparation place. The sandwiches that are made in a restaurant or in a café have a completely different taste from the sandwiches made in roadside shops. Taste, preparation, quality, everything changes, but still we call both of them a sandwich. This shows that anything made with two slices of bread with a filling can be called a sandwich. And this same idea was used by the Englishmen in the eighteenth century to name anything made of two slices of bread a sandwich. And the fun part is that a sandwich is a food which is named after a person. Yes, the sandwich is named after an eighteenth century English aristocrat, John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. According to a popular story, John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, often asked for meat between two slices of bread while playing cards, so he could eat without interrupting the game. And this became the starting point of what we now call veg sandwiches, chicken sandwiches, Nutella sandwiches and many more…

So, next time when you order your favourite sandwich, just remember this story! And if you are craving one now, visit our Honey Bee House to taste some delicious sandwiches!
